Quest 2 & Microsoft Flight Simulator Stuttering Performance Problem

Every time i would put on the Quest 2 VR headset in game and in the Oculus home screen would lag down to 8fps.

It would do this every time i put on the headset when it was linked up via a USB 3.0 cable.  The headset had no problems with any other game and the game ran fine when in non VR mode.  The PC was Windows 10 fully updated with drivers and updates.

So i tried everything i could think of to fix this problem and it was alot.

  • Latest BETA Oculus Software
  • Latest BETA Graphics Card Drivers
  • Uninstall & Reinstall of Graphics cards with clean install and DDU
  • Lowering graphics settings in game
  • Windows 11
  • Complete Reinstall of Windows 10
  • Oculus Tray Tool
  • Power Plan settings

The reinstall:
This was where most PC problems get resolved and at first when i booted the game up up with a brand new Windows 10 install the game ran fine in VR.

Then i thought the problem was fixed so as i began reinstalling software like Steam,Visual Studio,Visual Code,Bit defender.  The problem unexpectedly started happening again which was incredibly frustrating to say the least.

then i had an Eureka moment, the problem seemed to come back when i reinstalled Bit-defender.  So i thought it must be interfering  somehow with the game?

Exclusions:
I then fired up the Bit defender settings and added the folder where the game is installed to the Exclusion list of Bit defender.

MSFS main folder added as an exclusion in bitdefender.

After trying the game again with the new settings in Bit defender, the stuttering and loss of fps went away!

Windows 10 Wont enter sleep mode with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick plugged in

Windows 10 Wont enter sleep mode with Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick plugged in.

I ran into this problem a while back as no matter what i did my PC would enter sleep mode.  i tried everything;

  • bios settings
  • windows power saver settings
  • driver updates

Turns out it was due to having the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick plugged in which i might add is a superb Joystick for Flight Simulator 2020.

Geforce Experience Bug:

Turned out, there is a bug in nVIDIA experience, down in the Windows driver level that would prevent the system from being idle, if you have a joystick plugged in (the article goes a bit deeper into details, it is very interesting if you are a software development related kind of person).

TL:DR , if you have nVIDIA GPU + nVIDIA GeForce Experience installed + have any kind of joystick plugged into the system , Windows won’t be able to sleep/turn screen off automatically until either:

  1. You turn off nVIDIA GeForce Experience in-game overlay.

  2. You unplug ALL joysticks off your system.

PSA: if GeForce Experience is enabled and joysticks are plugged in, Windows can’t automatically turn off screen / go to sleep. This is critical if you are using an OLED screen for your simpit. from flightsim

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020’s August update gives huge performance boost!

The game which has been out for over a year has been a pain to get a decent performance out off.   With random stutters and freezes and inconsistent framerates its been well a huge disappointment personally.  So much so that I had given up on ever playing it again due to state of the Graphic’s Card market (With Sky-high prices) and the only way to get it running anywhere decent would be a graphics card upgrade.

The August update/Xbox release Patch :
Ever since the august patch/Xbox Release (world update 5) there were reports that this latest patch would give a huge performance increase.  Some outlets reported a 50% increase in performance which I doubted most of these outlets have access to newer Graphics cards.

The august update give the game at least a 50% increase in performance amazing! The game which would never let me fly over high-populated areas like NewYork and London would finally and my god my first trip over New York was stunning.  Looking down below at streets and cars moving along while seeing buildings for miles was incredible.

Call of duty Black ops 3 not starting in windows 10 solution

Even though Black Ops 3 is 6 years old i wanted to try it out again and ran into massive problems and it wouldn’t start and not even in safe mode!

After spending a few hours trying to search for a solution online which i tried them all, i found nothing that worked.

The first thing i tried was to add the games folder to my antivirus exceptions list.

Bitdefender:
After giving up on ever getting the game to start again i was messing about in Bitdefender thinking there must be some setting that’s causing the problem.

Advanced Threat Detection-Causes the game to not start:
Add an exception in Bitdefender and make sure that “Advanced Threat Detection” is on for the exclusion to “blackops3.exe” as below.

HOW TO FIX microsoft flight sim 2020 livery Problem after latest patch 29th oct 2020

The latest MSFS2020 patch breaks some liveries working but theres a fix. The problem seems to be that the livery will not load now if the livery hasnt got a model folder.

In other words the aircraft.cfg file must have a valid entry in the model=”” field. This model folder must exist and must the same name as the texture folder.

[FLTSIM.3]
title = "Airbus A320 Neo Aer Lingus Original" ; Variation name
model = "" ; model folder
panel = "" ; panel folder
sound = "" ; sound folder
texture = "EIN1" ; texture folder

The above entry in the aircraft.cfg file must be changed to;

[FLTSIM.3]
title = "Airbus A320 Neo Aer Lingus Original" ; Variation name
model = "EIN1" ; model folder
panel = "" ; panel folder
sound = "" ; sound folder
texture = "EIN1" ; texture folder

So for every livery you must create a “model.liveryname” folder with a model.cfg file inside and update layout.json file with an entry for the new model.cfg file;

{
"path": "SimObjects/Airplanes/Asobo_A320_NEO/MODEL.EIN1/model.cfg",
"size": 902,
"date": 132434199000000000
},

Maybe they will fix this, but for now it works.

Msfs 2020 – Create your own liveries & scenary tutorials

Flight Sim 2020 is a huge improvement in the Flight Sim series but one of the best things about is that you can create your own content! There are many ways from using the SDK to creating your own liveries. So i thought id post a collection of videos and tutorials ive found usefull

Liveries- Creating Your Own:
Heres are a few videos on how to create your own liveries with full instructions, its requires some photoshop skills.

Photoshop/Gimp Method:
This method is by far the easier in my opinion as the blender painting method can get tricky.

3D Painting with Blender:
Really depends on your skills with Blender in my opinion.

Video1: how to paint liverys easier with Blender
Video2: Another Tutorial on Blender
Vid3: Shorter Video from the author of the import plugin for blender

Microsoft Flight Sim 2020 – Anomolies Dundalk,Drogheda

These are tiny “issues” in a great sim but none the less a bit of a letdown. There are problems with bridges in the game including;

  • local drogheda viaduct bridge,
  • sydney harbour
  • firth bridge in scotland.

Below are some local things i found while flying around co. louth

Drogheda viaduct bridge is sunken into the ground
